  • Laura Steenberge
  • My Allowance
  • Kolovos Fujioka Shiroishi Trio

Laura Steenberge is a performer and composer in Los Angeles who researches language and the voice. Influenced by folk music, psycholinguistics, acoustics and medieval Byzantine chant, collectively her work is a study of nonsense and the boundaries of knowledge. A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and public speaker, Steenberge uses voice, contrabass, viola da gamba, objects, images and movement to create works that intersect mythology and imaginary music with science and the physical shape of sound in traditional and site-specific locations throughout California, including SF MOMA, the Sutro Baths, the Hammer Museum, REDCAT and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She holds BAs in music and linguistics from the University of Southern California, an MFA in composer/performer and integrated media from CalArts, and a DMA in music composition from Stanford University. She teaches experimental sound practices at CalArts.

My Allowance is recently formed by three music school grads hungering to rock responsibly. My Allowance dresses in primary colors, performs multiple songs at the same time, sings lyrics written by cellphones and compiled from advertising slogans, has had their instruments surgically fused to their bodies, uses unpredictable song structures and mixed meters (not as proggy as it sounds), and their vital organs are sustained by specially designed Home Depot torso packs.  Currently, they are working on a collection of songs based on the concepts and writings of multispecies feminist theorist Donna Haraway.

Kolovos Fujioka Shiroishi Trio is an improvising collective of guitar, drums, and saxophone featuring members of numerous other ensembles including Corima, Japanties, Nakata, Upsilon Acrux, Chelsea Wolfe, and Japanties.
