Maya Dunietz performs the music of Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou

Pianist Maya Dunietz will perform piano pieces and songs by legendary Ethiopian composer Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou.

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, born in 1923, is an Ethiopian composer, pianist and nun, living in Jerusalem. She was trained in Western classical music, and lived in Ethiopia, Switzerland, Italy, and Egypt before settling in Israel. In 2013, Maya Dunietz initiated and directed a tribute to Guèbrou at the Jerusalem Season of Culture, which included the first ever publication of Guèbrou's piano pieces, and a series of concerts performed by Dunietz, among others. Maya Dunietz, born in 1981, is a composer, pianist and sound artist. Her work ranges between composing for ensembles and choirs, performing as a pianist and singer, creating performance and sound installations, and building electronic instruments. Dunietz founded the experimental vocal ensemble Givol Choir and is a member of the Israeli band Habiluim. During 2015, Dunietz will be teaching at CalArts as part of the Schusterman Family Foundation artists in residence program. In January 2016, she will have her first solo exhibition at the Center For Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv.
